On the Benefits of Representing Music Objects as Fuzzy Sets

Over the past few years, fuzzy set theory has become a well-established mathematical theory that has been applied in many practical applications. In this paper, we elaborate on the use of fuzzy sets in the context of music information retrieval. First, we demonstrate that music objects like artists and songs can straightforwardly be represented as fuzzy sets, and then we explain why it is beneficial to represent them in this way. In particular, we illustrate the potential of this fuzzy approach by describing how we relied on it to build the popular “Multi Tag Search” demonstration on http://playground.last.fm.
